Shanti is going to Doggie Day Care…

Just sharing a little bit of my personal life here :)

Tomorrow we are trying Doggie Day Care for Shanti.  We went yesterday for her tempermant test and they said she’ll do great, but I feel like a mommy sending her 5 year old off to Kindergarten for the first time.  And, oh my gosh, what an annoying mom I’d be.  You should see the list that I have typed (yes, you read that right) out for the daycare people–no tug toys (remember her awful surgeries last year?), no playing outside if it is over 90 degrees out (she is a pug, you know), please practice “wait” and “leave it” with her…oy.  I’m sure these people can’t wait to see the back of me driving away!

I think that this could be a really good thing for her.  She’d have a chance to socialize with other dogs and also to meet new people.  But, yesterday, after we got back from the one hour assessment she was so exhausted she slept until this morning.  So, of course, the worrying begins (how can that be normal to be that tired, blah, blah, blah)–because, hey, that’s just how I roll.

Anyway, keep in mind this face tomorrow and send good thoughts her way!  I hear there’s a French Bulldog that will just love our Shanti!

Rehabilitation Through Photography

There is a great organization called Rehabilitation Through Photography that you need to know about. Their words are better than any way that I might describe them….

“Rehabilitation Through Photography provides photography instruction and programs to the physically and emotionally handicapped, the elderly, at-risk youth, the economically disadvantaged, the homeless and, the visually impaired. This photography instruction engages individuals with the wider world beyond their limitations and empowers them to see and act in creative and life-affirming ways.”

I just love that. Anyway, they are wrapping up their summer drive right now and need donations of new or used cameras. Check out this link for more info.

They only need 75 more cameras by Sept.1 to meet their goal. I know we can help them!

Why is professional baby photography worth the price tag?

Great online article at http://www.babyphotographers.com on what makes professional baby photography worth the price tag.  In these tough economic times, deciding where to spend your hard earned dollars is extremely important.  This article sheds some insight on what you get for your money when hiring a professional photographer for your important family portraits.  Very informative!

Proud member of NAPCP and HeArts Speak…

I am so proud to have recently been accepted into two very special professional organizations.

First, the National Association of Professional Child Photographers (www.napcp.com) Their mission is “to promote and support the artistry and integrity of the most talented, creative, and professional child photographers”.   It is an honor to be accepted into such good company of talent child photographers.

Second, HeArts Speak (www.heartsspeak.org).  They are a wonderful new organization whose focus is to connect animal artists with animal rescue groups in order to use their art to help get animals adopted.  Now, you all know how crazy I am about animals.  I am super excited to get started working with this organization to help give back some of the love that I get from my two dogs every day.

Just wanted to share my excitement and pride!  You can find out more about both on their websites and they are both also on Facebook.

Our little birthday girl…

Shanti is 3 years old today.  As you know, if you follow the blog, this past year was a tough one for her.  We had some big surgeries and some scary times.  It makes this birthday extra special.  We sure do love this little girl :)

our neighborhood “baby”…

Well, as my Facebook friends know–we have had a roosting owl in our neighborhood that recently had babies.  I have been just crossing my fingers to get a pic of the baby (one did not make it).  So, last week my neighbor called to tell me that she could see the owl really well.  I went down there with my camera and unfortunately for me, the baby wasn’t in the greatest spot with regards to the light.  How thoughtless of her!  So, forgive my not so great quality pics, but I just had to share my excitement.  Everyone, meet “Baby”:

Snowy Dallas morning

We have had SO much snow this winter!  I woke up to such a winter wonderland that, of course, pics were in order! Man, when your mom is a photographer you just never get a break, do ya?

And how lucky are we to live here?

I’m just sayin’…

I really do have the 2 cutest dogs in the world.

So, I’m in the studio getting ready for a session and have a couple of new things to try out in the meantime…light, etc.  Well, of course these 2 want in on the action.  And, really, how lucky am I to have 2 such adorable models whenever I want to play?  Normally I wouldn’t have collars and tags on in pet portraits, but they literally just got in the basket as I was setting things up so of course I had to take their pic.  They were just asking for it!

They are so cute…and its not me being biased.  It is just a universal truth.

Happy Holidays!

I am so, so, so behind in my blogging and I do have a few sessions that I need to post about…but first things first.  I just have to share holiday pics of our two “babies”….the cutest 2 dogs in the world!

And my favorite, which was taken by Pat.  Now we totally understand how hard it is for parents to get pics of their own kids!  You should have seen us out there….Pat ready with the camera, and me trying every possible trick to get them to “stay!” and “look at Daddy!”…

Isn’t Life, and Facebook, amazing?

UPDATE:  Just got in touch with another very favorite former student, who is up in Boston attending Graduate School….I’m so proud of my former first graders!  Daria–you go, Girl!

Okay…so as you know (if you’ve read the “About Amy” page on my website), I was a teacher in my former life.  So now, all of those little first graders that I used to teach are grown up (yes, I’m showing my age—but in my defense, I was very young when I was teaching!).  Over the past few years I have run into some at random places like Starbucks or Best Buy and I’m always so surprised that they recognize me.  I mean, they were 6 at the time and I was fresh out of college.  It always, always warms my heart so much when they tell me that I made an impact on them and on their life and I’m glad that I was there then, even though I’m so glad that I’m “here” now.

So, my point (yes, I do have one)…last night I heard from one of my former first graders.  She asked if I remembered her.  Not only do I remember her, but she was one of my very favorite students ever (and that’s saying a lot because I taught for about 12 years total).  She found me on Facebook.  Amazing.

Now, she’s all grown up and a fashion designer here in Dallas.  And…for all of my moms-to-be and new moms…she designs Maternity and Newborn clothing, among other absolutely gorgeous designs.  So, if you want to see some really unique clothing, check out her website at
